This is Jim, whose cabin I stayed at over the Labor Day weekend. Me and Jim had some discussions about our different political beliefs. It was all amicable. Jim is a dapper fellow who loves theater and film. He and JoAnn just did a film together about a couple their age working out problems in their relationship.
Jim talked with me about his views on abortion and taxes and things like that.
He said that Rousseau made statements about how people must give up their freedom for the greater good of the country. He said that's what democrats believe in. I thought he was twisting Rousseau's quote, which I have on my blog "Go Free Now" - "man was born free but is everywhere in chains," which seems to point out the tragedy of man being in chains. He was saying that he believed Rousseau was trying to say that man should be in chains. The things is, Jim is a free spirit, and lives so free, I don't think his ideology and his life match up.
He is so generous. He was so hospitable towards me, and JoAnn was too. She cooked for everyone, and in general, was the perfect hostess. They are dear people. These are the kind of people who like Obama. This is no joke. I just think that intelligent, good people should see through him. But I have to accept that people like these relatives - don't.
Here is a small town we visited that was putting on "Uff Da Days" - a Scandinavian celebration.
This is Jim's cabin in Northern Minnesota, near Akeley, Minnesota, on Ham Lake. Get this! No hot and cold running water, except for a little trickling lake water in the taps for a little washing. Otherwise, you must take a bath in the lake! There was a flushing toilet, thank God! I was shampooing in the lake! I laughed to think of how I usually shower after I go for a swim in the lake.
This is a friend of Jim and JoAnn's who came to stay for part of the weekend. She's a liberal too!
This is me, the lone conservative!
This is Jim and his son, Doug, also a liberal! Doug is just the sweetest thing!
