My sister, who is living in Germany, sent an e-mail that sheds light on this. My Uncle's girlfriend Sharon Ann had written to her asking about this.
From my sister Janet:
Just to comfort those of you who think gasoline has gotten too expensive in the States! Sharon Ann asked me if the calculations were right.....(you figure for yourself if my math was correct on this one---if not, I stand corrected ;-) but at any rate, it's terribly expensive---I am riding my bike where possible to do small errands, even it I have to ride several kilometers and come back up the steep hill to our house----lots of people bike to work now, men in suits and ties....but the traffic jams are the same as ever ;-( ....
Hi Janet,
How much are you paying for petrol? We heard you're paying $9.50 per
gallon. We wondered if the reporter did the exchange rate and
gallons and liters math correctly.
Sharon Ann
Hi Sharon Ann,
well, we are paying almost € 1.60 for a liter now, so I guess that is € 6.40 for a gallon, which would translate at a rate of 1.55 to.......? I get $9.90 a gallon (I guess four liters is not exactly a gallon, however, it's a fews drops more, (or "a "liter" bit more", as I remember the ad once....) ....so maybe that puts it down to $9.40 ;-) The prices do vary slightly, of course, from parts of the country to others, but I'd say this estimate hits it pretty much on the head (i.e.in the wallet!!! ;-(
love, Janet
