Here is an interesting history of how we got the words "In God We Trust" on our coins.
Interesting to note are the words:
"You are probably a Christian. What if our Republic were not shattered beyond reconstruction? Would not the antiquaries of succeeding centuries rightly reason from our past that we were a heathen nation?" and "Dear Sir: No nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins."
It is always interesting to note how short a time ago (1861) the leaders of our nation collectively thought and spoke in this way.
