Welcome to God's Garden

John Erick Tolkkinen

I came to work Friday to find that a co-worker had suddenly died. It is not often that such a thing happens to you! The strange thing is that he is the one that I had just gotten the chance to share my faith with and the verse Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

He had rejected faith in God, at least according to what he said, and I sensed that he was hung up on things that he thought God didn't want him to do, and that was the reason. I told him not to reject God just because there are things he likes to do, like a little gambling. God doesn't expect perfection when we come to Him.

Isn't it cool that just before he died God was leading me to share with him like this? Who knows what happened in his life just before he died? And only God knows the hearts of men.

Anyway, he didn't wake up one morning, and it was probably a brain aneurism (not very scientific here). He was only 42.

He was very worried about his future, about money. He was planning to go back to school. He was fragile in a way. It just goes to show that we don't need to worry. You never know if tomorrow may be your last day.

He was learning a song. It was a poem he found in the paper and he was playing a tune to it and was preparing that for the day when his father died because he was so worried about how sad he would be when his father would pass away. That's chilling, I know, but it leaves us with a beautiful poem that can be sung to him instead.

Hush now, hush now
please don't cry
There comes a time
When we all must die.

Do not stand at my
Grave and weep,
I am not there
I do not sleep.

I am the thousand
Winds that blow,
I am the diamonds
Glint upon the snow.

I am the sunlight
On ripened grains,
I am the soft and
Gentle autumn rains.

I am the circling
Birds in flight,
I am the soft star
That shines at night.

When you awaken
In the mornings hush,
I am the swift
Uplifiting rush.

Just take heed now
That I am at peace,
And from my pain,
I have release.

I have not gone
We will never part,
I will always be
Within your heart.

John, you are truly in a better place. You are remembered by your co-workers. Condolences to all your family members and members of the Laestodian Lutheran church that he was a part of.
Rest in peace John.

I hope so too. I'm doing OK. A little shaken and depressed because of this. Thanks.

Don't forget... The Bible says that no person knows another's heart. God knows John's heart far better than you or I ever can. The Bible also says that love is greater than faith or hope, and John loved tremendously. I believe I'll see John again someday in heaven.

Dear sister Karen. When i put John's name in the title, I knew that someone like a member of the family could "google" and find this. And here we have it 'from the horse's mouth'. I am so happy you found this and that you came here to say this. I believe too that John is safe in God's hands. I had some doubt, only because we don't 'know another person's heart' but God gave me the assurance.
