Minnesota old friend writes

Quotation marks here:
When I imagine being in MN with this deluge of murder-prone ICE agents raining down on MY SOVEREIGN STATE it makes my blood boil.

Clinton and Obama deported a serious # of people but Trump just "has" to deport in his trademark "Showman Bully" style. 🙄

Just know this person is basically a Republican.

She goes on to post an article about Pretti.
Then shares an article about past enforcement against illegal immigration.

Under Barack Obama

Obama's administration saw more detailed tracking after ICE reforms (e.g., post-2009 death review processes prompted by advocacy and media scrutiny). Deaths occurred primarily in ICE detention facilities, often attributed to substandard medical care, despite promises of reform.

In-detention deaths: Reports consistently cite around 56 deaths in ICE custody during Obama's full term (2009–2017), including:

At least 6 suicides and one post-suicide-attempt death.

Analyses (e.g., ACLU, Detention Watch Network, National Immigrant Justice Center in 2016) found that in nearly half of reviewed cases (2010–2012), failures to comply with ICE medical standards contributed, with some deemed preventable (e.g., untreated infections, delayed care leading to cardiac issues or organ failure).

Human Rights Watch (2016) reviewed 18 deaths post-2012, concluding subpar care likely contributed to at least 7.

Other estimates (e.g., Cato Institute) place totals around 67–72 across fiscal years.

Under Bill Clinton

Clinton's era predated the creation of ICE (formed in 2003), so systematic tracking of detention deaths was limited. No comprehensive public tally exists for in-detention deaths during his terms, but policies like Operation Gatekeeper (launched 1994) and the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) militarized the border and funneled migrants into remote, dangerous areas (e.g., deserts, mountains).

This "prevention through deterrence" strategy significantly increased migrant deaths during border crossings, with estimates of hundreds to thousands over time [!!!  She inserts: "This can't be true!"😊 ] due to dehydration, exposure, drowning, or falls.

For example: Border-crossing deaths rose sharply after 1994, from under 30 annually to over 100 by the late 1990s in some sectors, with cumulative figures in the thousands since (e.g., reports cite ~1,700 reported deaths from 1994–mid-2001 in some analyses).

Human rights groups and academic studies (e.g., from UC San Diego) described these as foreseeable consequences of pushing crossings into lethal terrain. [She adds: "Gross!"]

She goes on to say:

A cynic would observe that when ICE kills white people like us, that's when we get upset.

When we lived in TX (1980s) I was learning Spanish even back then. One day a migrant (young male maybe 18-20 years old) appeared at the law firm where I worked. With my lousy Spanish I managed to understand that he may have been illegal, I saw he was frightened and really worried. Through the auspices of a Mexican friend Maria (my boss, law firm owner, gave me leave to do this) I drove him to one of her friends' houses in the suburbs where they, as Spanish speakers, took him in and found employment for him on a construction site.

Agents used to appear at a restaurant in Dallas where my husband and I worked. All the immigrants would get rounded up, but by us, lol, and hidden in the walk-in cooler till they left. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Very cool coming from this friend.

This old friend went to art school and got a bachelor of arts in art. At the end of it she said, "what am I going to do with an art degree?"
What she did with it...she became a legal secretary, lol.
Another friend from our same town said about her, "I always saw her as becoming more liberal." She knows the friend is open minded, creative.
I explained how my friend and her husband, revering things of faith, joined a community that is Catholic oriented when they wanted to start a family, thus the association with them brought them into more conservative politics.

I just wanted to show how you ought not just pigeon hole Republicans any more than you would want Democrats pigeonholed.
We're all just people trying to figure things out.
