Southern Women's Wisdom

Have you ever read just a few words of wisdom that you've carried with you for years? I found some words like that in just a chapter of a book on the wisdom of Southern women. I don't remember the name of the book or its author but it said something to the effect that there is a better way of dealing with situations than being harsh and direct.

Perhaps you're faced with a situation such as: you're a married woman and a married man is coming on to you. Instead of reacting harshly with angry words of being offended at his behavior, if he says something offensive like, "I would love to be holed up with you instead of my wife tonight!" you graciously ease your way out of the situation, and graciously move the man into a better position by saying something like, "oh, you don't really mean that," in a sweet, unassuming way, pushing him away gently.

She was saying that Southern women have gracious ways of dealing with situations better than coming on like a Mack truck. I have remembered those words and followed them. This correlates with scripture: Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Of course, there is the timeless wisdom of Northern women too where you hit people square between the eyes! (he he)

i moved to texas from new york a year ago. i don't completely understand native southerners yet. On the surface they are much more polite than new yorkers, I must say. But what lies beneath?

Recently I began teaching at a community college in south Texas. The students in my classes are going to teach me a lot -- of that I'm sure.

Hey Lea! I am glad I'm looking back at these. If I didn't I wouldn't catch these comments! I haven't spent much time in the South. I just know some Southerners in the Carolinas who I like.
